Inspirational OT verses pt. 1

Numbers 21:6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

Deutoronomy 25:11 When men strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets:

1 Kings 20:30 But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and there a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men that were left. And Benhadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.

1 Samuel 25:22 So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.

1 Kings 14:10 Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone.

2 Samuel 1:26 I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

2 Kings 2:23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.

24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

Sometimes I think we don’t appreciate just how lucky we are that a book this rich somehow managed to survive into the present day.

  1. Yeah, there are some real gems in the Old Testament. However, I bet that if we possessed a correct translation of the original texts and an appreciation of the historical and cultural contexts in which they were written, we would find even these passages to be about as dense and dry as most of the OT (which does not exclude the possibility of them actually being doctrinally significant, for those who care about that kind of thing). I’m surprised you left out almost any verse from Song of Solomon, but perhaps that book is just too obviously weird and out of place.

  2. May GOD bless you hydralisk! The Old Testament quotes you have provided so far, are an inspiration. I whole-heartedly agree with your final sentence!

The Old Testament is the old portion of my Bible that I read, over and over. It’s the only portion worth reading and believing.

  3. I agree zug. Its the reason behind the article of faith. As far as it is translated correctly. Not constantine nicerian creed.

  4. At Bible Gateway you can look up a passage in 20 different translations (and 50 or so languages). Fortunately, 2 Samuel 1:26 is awesome in every one of them.
