Superfluous phrase of the day

“Of course America has done bad things too.”

The thing is, I’ve never heard anybody ever say otherwise. Even those generally ignorant of history instinctively know the statement must be true. So where’s the necessity in repeating that which nobody disputes? Why take up defensive measures against a straw man when you can simply step around the damn thing?

  1. People feel the need to add these caveats so they appear open minded.

  2. So they appear open-minded, fair, balanced, moderate, centrist, informed, educated, not too extreme, nice, reasonable. It conveys no needed information. It serves only the function of image and appearance.

  3. I disagree with the superfluous sentence. When has “America” done a bad thing? As far as I’m concerned, “America” is a geographical entity and is uncapable of action. Americans may have done bad things. Americans may have done good things. Americans may have done things that cannot be classified as good or bad. Americans are people capable of action.

People who utter the superfluous phrase, “Of course America has done bad things too”, are morons.
